Theresa May's planned changes to social care could see people forced to pay for their entire care cost until they reach their last £100,000 of assets, potentially affecting 97% of homeowners in Haringey.

The Conservatives have suggested that there may be a cap but the details of the cap have not been announced.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Hornsey & Wood Green, Dawn Barnes, has urged residents, irrespective of their party affiliation, to join a campaign (http://www.libdems.org.uk/dementiatax) to stop the Conservative social care plans which would saddle the estates of those with long-term illnesses with crippling care costs.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for a penny on income tax to boost funding for the NHS and social care by £6bn a year, as well as a £72,000 cap to protect people from crippling care costs.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Hornsey & Wood Green Dawn Barnes commented:

"The Conservative plans make paying for social care a lottery. Rather than everyone contributing to the costs of care, some individuals with conditions like dementia through no fault of their own will see the value of their home whittled away in home care costs.

"The proposals were devised without input from experts, ignore advice from charities and care providers and fly in the face of a recent independent review. Every elderly person who needs care should receive it in the best place for them. People shouldn't have to worry about losing everything they've worked hard for to pay for crippling care costs."
