Ally Pally Crossrail 2 route backed by local Lib Dems
Haringey Lib Dems have backed the Alexandra Palace and Turnpike Lane route for Crossrail 2 over the Wood Green Station route. Crossrail 2 has been consulting on the two different route options, the consultation closed on Friday.
Last week, Haringey Lib Dems submitted their response to the Crossrail 2 consultation, with the results of their survey of local residents. The survey found 78.5% of local residents who responded, backed the Alexandra Palace/Turnpike Lane route and only 21.5% backed the Wood Green Station route.
In their consultation response, the Lib Dems set out their reasons for backing the Alexandra Palace route, over the Wood Green Station route:
• Alexandra Palace needs enhanced transport links, given the large events that are frequently held there and the plans to renovate the building and attract more visitors.
• The Turnpike Lane area is in need of regeneration and Crossrail 2 would boost the area greatly.
• Turnpike Lane Station also provides better interchanges than Wood Green for a number of reasons including the bus station based there.
• Traffic near Wood Green Station is already very heavy, a Crossrail 2 Station in that area is likely to add more traffic, with more visitors and more development.
Haringey Lib Dems have also raised concerns about the plans for a construction shaft on Downhills Park and the impact it will have on local residents. They have urged Crossrail 2 to consider alternative locations on brownfield sites in the area and to limit the impact of construction work on local residents.
Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, comments:
“Whilst the Lib Dems support having Crossrail 2 in the borough we do have concerns about plans for a shaft on one of the local parks and about the impact of construction work on local residents. We urge Crossrail 2 and Transport for London to do what they can to limit the impact of the work on local people.
“The Lib Dems are backing the Alexandra Palace route because we want to see the palace flourish and because we believe Turnpike Lane needs regeneration and provides better interchanges, making it a better choice for Crossrail 2. That is a view backed by local residents who responded to our survey. ”
