Alternative regeneration plans voted down by Labour councillors at budget meeting
Last night, Haringey Lib Dems put forward an alternative regeneration plan for the borough in a series of budget amendments at a Full Council meeting in Wood Green. All the Lib Dem amendments were blocked by Haringey Labour councillors who voted them down at the meeting.
If passed the Lib Dem amendments would have scrapped Labour plans to spend £33m on a new council HQ and cut savings expected to be made by the controversial Haringey development Vehicle and its privatisation of £2bn of public property.
With the money saved by not building a new council HQ the Lib Dems proposed:
- Spending at least £19m building new affordable and council homes on council owned land across the borough
- Building a leisure centre with a swimming pool in Wood Green
- Making improvements to Muswell Hill Library and keeping it in its current, historic home
Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, comments:
“Haringey Liberal Democrats put forward ambitious proposals for regenerating the borough. Our plans would not require the controversial Haringey Development vehicle with its massive risks to council homes and public property. Instead we would build new affordable and council homes, a new leisure centre and swimming pool for the 28,000 people in Wood Green and improve Muswell Hill Library.
“It is a shame that the Labour councillors all voted against these alternative regeneration plans and opted to carry on with the Haringey Development Vehicle and the privatisation of £2bn of public property.”
