CCTV blindspot in Highgate to be fixed thanks to a two-year campaign by Lib Dem councillors

CCTV cameras will soon begin appearing in Highgate for the first time. It is currently the only ward in Haringey without any cameras operated by the Council. However, a campaign by the ward’s Liberal Democrat councillors has forced the Council to relent. One of its representatives recently wrote to Cllr Liz Morris to confirm that they would begin installing a batch of new cameras from the beginning of next year and intend to sight a number in Highgate.

For Cllr Morris and her colleagues this represents the successful conclusion of a campaign that began in 2017. Following an upswing in phone thefts and moped crime including a smash and grab raid on Gail’s bakery, Highgate residents and the Liberal Democrat councillors for the ward began pressing the Council to deter crime in the area by installing cameras.

Cllr Morris responded to the announcement with the following comment:

“This is welcome news, but it is unacceptable that the Council has left Highgate without camera coverage for so long. Neighbouring wards with comparable levels of crime had cameras installed years ago.

“We will work with the Council, police and residents to make sure these new cameras go in the right place.”
