Closure of Tottenham Court threatens access to justice

HLD

Haringey Liberal Democrats have warned that the closure of Tottenham Magistrates Court threatens to undermine access to justice for local people in Haringey.

The court closure was announced by the Conservative Government this week and is part of a national move to close courts across the country and improve those that remain.

Following the closure, victims and witnesses in Haringey will have to travel nearly 5 miles away from Tottenham Magistrates Court to attend their nearest court, Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on Holloway Road in Islington.

Whilst the Liberal Democrats nationally, support any attempts to upgrade the legal system, they believe it should not be done at the expense of local justice.

Cllr Martin Newton, Haringey Lib Dems Crime and Policing Spokesperson, comments:

“Tottenham Magistrates Court has served our community well. I urge the Conservative Government to think again and conduct a truly local impact assessment, rather than forcing the closure of this local court.

"Victims and witnesses should not have to travel for miles, to a court out of the borough.”
