Councillors volunteer at petrol station

HLD

Following the recent petrol shortages, Liberal Democrat councillors have been volunteering with local residents in Bounds Green, in an attempt to bring some order to the petrol station there, which has been totally overwhelmed by motorists.

Haringey’s Labour council unfortunately did not seen fit to try and police the situation, but a number of residents, including Councillors Dawn Barnes (LD-Crouch End) and Justin Hinchcliffe (LD-Fortis Green) donned hi-vis vests in order to steward traffic and help people cross the road.

The long queues of cars are extremely unsafe, as the petrol station is opposite Bounds Green Primary School, and there are many children trying to cross the road. Crossing has become almost impossible due to the sheer volume of cars on the road.

Furthermore, the air quality outside the school is getting ever worse. Air quality in our area is already poor, but the effect of hundreds of cars idling their engines in a queue is, of course, exacerbating things. This is extraordinarily bad for young children's lungs, which are still developing, and can be permanently damaged by breathing in the fumes.
