Environment Day is a chance for Haringey to commit to real green action
It has been 15 months since Haringey declared a Climate Emergency and yet the Labour group running the Council has made few changes. Local Lib Dem councillors have warned that warm words and a letter from the Cabinet Member responsible will not cool our planet, action is needed for that.
Opposition Liberal Democrats have put forward a multitude of proposals to help lower the Council’s carbon footprint since the announcement. These include creating energy efficient homes, promoting active travel and completely removing fossil fuels from its pension investments.
However, councillors from the Labour Group have consistently rejected these ideas. Whilst a proposal for School Streets from the Lib Dems, which resulted in a promise for a report into delivering School Streets by March 2020, has yet to materialise.
Cllr Scott Emery, Haringey Lib Dem environmental spokesperson comments that:
“An emergency needs a rapid response and Haringey Labour have yet to get out of the starting blocks on reducing its carbon footprint”
“As today is Environment Day we once again implore Labour to take a look at its proposals and ask, is this the best we can do? We’ve only got one planet and we have to do everything we can, and urgently to save it”
