Families to be hit by Universal Credit cut

An analysis by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has shown that Tottenham will have the second highest number of families who will be hit by the £20 cut to Universal Credit and Working Tax Credit planned for October.

The analysis breaks down the number and proportion of families affected by constituency. Tottenham is second on the list, behind only West Ham, whilst Hornsey and Wood Green also figures highly - 82nd of the 632 British constituencies.

Tottenham has 26,090 families in receipt of either UC or WTC. That is 40% of all families in the constituency - and it rises to 65% of those with children. Meanwhile, 12,790 families in Hornsey and Wood Green will be hit. That is 20% of all families, again rising to 32% of those with children.

Cllr Josh Dixon (LD-Alexandra), Deputy Leader of the Opposition on Haringey Council, said:
“This callous Tory government is once again showing that it is not on the side of people in Haringey. This cut will push 2.3 million people into debt, and comes at a time when many people are still struggling to get back on their feet after being furloughed for many months. Liberal Democrats will continue to fight this cut, and stand up for residents all over the borough."
