Haringey agrees to expand free period product provision
After a motion brought by the Liberal Democrats, Haringey Council has unanimously agreed to expand the provision of free period products in all council owned buildings.
Free period products are already available in some libraries thanks to the ‘Tricky Period’ initiative developed by homelessness charity Streets Kitchen, trialled during the Covid pandemic. However, following the Liberal Democrat motion, provision is planned to be expanded to cover all public toilets in all council-owned buildings; and sanitary waste bins will also be provided in all toilets.
The council has also agreed to survey all schools in the borough to ensure free period products are provided for pupils, and to run a media campaign raising awareness of the fact that free products are available.
Cllr Alessandra Rossetti (LD-Alexandra Park), who brought the motion, said:
“Too many of our residents are suffering the indignity of period poverty, and are not aware of the free products that are already available in Haringey. I am very pleased that this motion was passed with the support of all councillors, and hope that this expansion of free products, together with an information campaign, will make more of our struggling residents more aware of the help that is available.”
