Haringey Liberal Democrats have strongly criticised the borough’s four Labour MPs for failing to support key motions aimed at solving the health and care crises.

None of Haringey’s MPs – Bambos Charalambous, David Lammy, Tulip Siddiq and Catherine West – voted in favour of two Liberal Democrat proposals in Parliament. One motion called for immediate action to improve access to NHS services, while the other addressed the financial struggles of unpaid carers.

The first motion, part of the Liberal Democrats’ first Opposition Day since 2009, urged the Government to cancel unfair Carers' Allowance repayments and conduct a full review of the support available to unpaid carers. Many carers have been asked to repay thousands of pounds due to overpayments, causing financial hardship.

The second motion focused on the ongoing issues in community healthcare. It called on the Government to guarantee that everyone can see a GP within 7 days (or within 24 hours for urgent cases) and ensure emergency access to NHS dentists. The Liberal Democrats highlighted shocking figures showing that 45% of Brits were unable to get an NHS appointment in the last year, and that 1 in 4 people have missed work due to these delays.

Despite the serious strain on the NHS and community healthcare, Charalambous and West actively voted against the healthcare motion, while none of Haringey’s MPs attended the vote on the Carers’ Allowance motion.

Haringey Liberal Democrats have described this lack of support as “deeply disappointing” and vowed to continue fighting for better healthcare and carer support.

Cllr Pippa Connor (LD-Muswell Hill), Opposition Spokesperson on Health, said:
“It is deeply disappointing to see our Labour MPs fail to back these critical motions. The Liberal Democrats are pushing for clear, practical solutions – faster GP appointments, better access to NHS dentists, and fair treatment for unpaid carers. These are urgent issues that affect everyone in our community.

“We will continue to press our MPs to make health and social care their top priority.”
