Labour Councillor expelled from party over anti-semitic tweets

Responding to the news that Cllr Joy Wallace (Ind-Fortis Green) has been expelled from the Labour Party, Councillor Dawn Barnes, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Fortis Green ward, said:
“Cllr Wallace should resign her seat on the council immediately. Her anti-semitic and anti-asian tweets showed that she was unfit to be a councillor, and it now looks as though even the Labour Party, who supported her election, agree. Fortis Green residents deserve a representative who will fight for them, whatever their background, not a councillor who is constantly busy fighting accusations of racism.

“Haringey Labour’s refusal to kick Cllr Wallace out of their group without instructions from the national party must cast doubt on their promises to our Jewish residents that they are able to trust the local Labour Party. Their lack of due diligence when selecting candidates, and the snail-like pace with which they dealt with these serious allegations, is not good enough, and Haringey Liberal Democrats will continue to call them out on their failings.”

Notes:

  • Jewish Chronicle article on Cllr Wallace’s tweets
  • Lib Dem petition for Labour to suspend Cllr Wallace
  • Haringey Liberal Democrats saw further tweets, including one commenting that a Jewish man criticising Jeremy Corbyn at a Board of Deputies conference would find ‘the Israeli way and life is best for him’; and another seemingly endorsing the conspiracy theory promoted by Maxine Peake that the policemen who killed George Floyd had used tactics taught by the Israeli secret service (screenshots available upon request)
  • Fortis Green ward contains a sizeable Jewish population of over 8%, the highest in the west of Haringey, and an Asian population of 7%.
