Labour-run council fails to answer 1 in 3 phone calls from residents

Haringey’s Lib Dem opposition have uncovered figures showing 30% of residents’ phone calls to Labour-run Haringey Council were not answered. The figures revealed that this year 1 in 3 calls (30%) were not answered, a drop from 2014 when 1 in 5 calls (17%) were not picked up. The council have a target of 10% or less phone calls not being answered.

The Lib Dem opposition have criticised Haringey’s Labour cabinet. At a Full Council meeting last night, Cllr Gail Engert, Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, questioned the Labour Deputy Leader about the failure in service. Cllr Engert suggested that recent cuts to customer service made by the Labour Cabinet had led to the poor service and the drop in the number of calls being answered.

Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, comments:

“I wish I could say I was shocked by these figures but any resident who has rung Labour-run Haringey Council in the last 18 months will know that they are in for a long wait, or no answer at all!

“The Liberal Democrats believe it is completely unacceptable that so many of residents’ phone calls are going unanswered. It is clear from residents’ complaints on social media that many of these calls are about important issues like housing and council tax.

“The Labour Cabinet must take urgent action and put more money and staff back into the customer services and reverse their cuts. People in Haringey pay the fifth highest Council tax in London and in return Labour are giving them a very poor service.”
