Labour-run council introduces new charges for garden waste (£75 a year)

HLD

Many residents have received a flyer from the Labour-run council about new charges for garden waste (£75 a year) explaining that households will also have to take a new garden waste wheelie bin.

Clearly there are many households in Haringey who do not have the space for a further (or any) wheelie bins. As the Lib Dem Deputy Leader of the Opposition, I have raised concerns about the changes with the Labour Cabinet Member.

I have been assured that residents will be offered a smaller bin or sacks to use for green waste instead of a wheelie bin. Residents will be able to sign up for the garden waste service from Monday 23rd October 2017 by email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.com phone: 020 8885 7700 or online: https://www.veolia.co.uk/haringey/

The Liberal Democrats have also raised concerns about the surprise charges for new refuse and recycling bins – from 31 July residents will have to buy their own refuse and recycling wheelie bins which will cost £30 each. We are concerned that some residents will not be able to pay, or will refuse to pay, which is likely to result in an increase in refuse left out on streets across the borough.

The Labour-run council will also will stop free collections of bulky items – from 24 July Haringey will charge £25 for 4 bulky items and £10 for additional items. Haringey is already a borough with one of the highest fly tipping rates in the country and we are concerned that fly tipping could increase with these new charges. We will be monitoring this very carefully, in case this is a false economy on the council’s part.

I have asked the Labour Cabinet Member how much the council plans to save over the next 3 years by charging residents for bins, and have questioned whether this saving will be wiped out by the extra cost of clearing up more dumped rubbish.

The Lib Dems will continue to press the council on these matters.

Kind regards,

Cllr Liz Morris
Lib Dem Deputy Leader of the Opposition
