Labour to spend £33m on new council headquarters

HLD

Haringey’s Lib Dem opposition have slammed Labour plans to spend £33m of public money on new ‘corporate headquarters’ for the local Labour-run council.

Cllr Gail Engert, Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, questioned the Labour Leader of Haringey on the spending plans at the Cabinet Meeting held in Wood Green on 14th June.

The shocking spending was listed in Haringey draft capital programme, which lists one-off projects, the new headquarters was recommended for approval by the Labour Cabinet.

The Lib Dems argue that the money would be better spent on facilities for local people instead, such as new affordable homes and a new swimming pool. The Lib Dems have campaigned for both new affordable homes and a swimming pool in Wood Green.

Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem Leader, comments:

“I am shocked that Labour think that spending £33m on shiny new offices for the council is appropriate when so many cuts to local services have been made. Local people will quite rightly want their council tax money spent on local services not plush offices.

“The Liberal Democrats believe that the £33m would be far better spent on new affordable homes and a new swimming pool for Wood Green.”
