Lib Dems: reverse Tory school cuts, invest £7bn in schools, and extend free school meals

HLD

The Lib Dems have promised to invest £7bn in schools and colleges across the country reversing the Conservatives proposed cuts which could see Haringey’s schools lose as much as £26m.

It forms part of a series of policies the Liberal Democrats are including in their newly published manifesto, with a focus on giving children and young people a brighter future.

The Lib Dem proposals also include:

  • Tripling the early years pupil premium
  • Extending free school meals to all primary school students
  • 1,102 young children in Haringey would benefit from Liberal Democrat plans to increase (triple funding for the early years pupil premium), which gives extra cash to nurseries, preschools and school receptions when they take on children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The cash would triple the funding to £1,000 per 3-4 year-olds pupil per year - up from £302 in 2015-16. This will increase the allocation for Haringey from around £317,000 to £952,000 and will pay for every disadvantaged child who benefits to receive 570 hours of state-funded early education.

Dawn Barnes, Liberal Democrat candidate for Hornsey & Wood Green, commented:

“We will give children in Hornsey & Wood Green a brighter future, by investing in children from more deprived backgrounds to give them the best possible chance in life. We will build a fairer Britain and ensure no child or young person is left behind.

“The Liberal Democrats will provide a strong opposition to this Conservative government and stand up against cuts to local schools and hospitals.”
