Lib Dems to hold public meeting on Labour privatisation plans
The Local Liberal Democrats have announced they will hold a public meeting on plans by Haringey's Labour Cabinet to privatise £2bn worth of council homes and public land across the borough. The homes and land are due to be transferred into the Haringey Development Vehicle, a company jointly owned by Haringey Council and a developer.
The meeting will be held on Monday 6th February, 7.30pm at St Marys Infants School, Church Lane, N8 7BU.
Lib Dem councillors and parliamentary spokesperson Dawn Barnes; Paul Burnham from Defend Haringey Housing; and Haringey Labour Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Alan Strickland, have all been invited to speak at the meeting. The meeting will be chaired by Cara Jenkinson.
The decision on who will be the chosen developer for the Haringey Development Vehicle is due to be made at a Cabinet meeting on 14th February at the Civic Centre in Wood Green.
Cara Jenkinson, Haringey Lib Dem Vice-Chair, comments:
“The Lib Dems are very concerned by these proposals. In fact, Liberal Democrat councillors voted to halt the plans at recent scrutiny meetings but the Labour Cabinet seem determined to go ahead with the proposal.
“We have organised this public meeting to inform local people and give them an opportunity to ask questions.”
Dawn Barnes, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesperson for Hornsey & Wood Green, comments:
“Labour's plans could have a massive impact on the lives of council tenants and the livelihood of local small business owners. Whilst Haringey badly needs new homes, there are other ways of achieving this without putting council homes, businesses in Muswell Hill, and large parts of Wood Green at risk."
