Muswell Hill Library saved!
Lib Dem campaigners have welcomed the news this morning that Haringey's Labour-run council has u-turned and decided not to proceed with plans to move Muswell Hill Library out of its historic home.
Haringey’s Labour Cabinet had previously consulted the public on their plans to move Muswell Hill Library from its current historic, listed building, to a new leased site at 54/56 Muswell Hill (old Green Man). Local Lib Dem councillors and residents campaigned against the plans which would have seen the historic building redeveloped and the library moved to an unsuitable site.
Cllr Gail Engert, Lib Dem councillor for Muswell Hill, comments:
“I am delighted that Labour have finally seen sense and listened to local residents who made it clear from the beginning that they opposed Labour’s plans to move Muswell Hill Library. The Lib Dems will continue to campaign to protect Haringey’s libraries and for improvements to be made at Muswell Hill Library such as installing a lift and disabled toilets.
“Labour now have to think about what to do with the site at 54/56 Muswell Hill, which they prematurely leased for their flawed library move. The Lib Dems believe the building should be used for a GP surgery or shared office space. We will push the council to ensure that it is not used for anything which would not be suitable in a residential area.”
