Plans for dementia nurses rejected by Haringey Labour councillors

Haringey Lib Dems put forward a proposal for the council to employ 4 Admiral Nurses. These specialist nurses care for those with dementia and support the friends and relatives that care for them. The Lib Dems put forward the proposal at Haringey's budget setting meeting on Monday evening. 

The Lib Dems argued the nurses could be paid for by not increasing the budget for the council’s policy team. They also pointed out that a similar scheme in Sutton had saved the local NHS money by reducing the number of people with dementia being admitted into hospital.

Haringey’s Labour councillors voted against the extra nurses and blocked the Lib Dem’s proposals.

Cllr Pippa Connor, Haringey Lib Dem Spokesperson for Adult and Care Services, comments:

“Admiral nurses make a massive difference to the lives of those who live with dementia and the people who care for them. I am disappointed that the Labour councillors did not agree with the Lib Dem proposals for 4 of these nurses to be employed in Haringey.

“These Admiral nurses would have provided much needed support to carers and a similar scheme in Sutton saw fewer people with dementia admitted to hospital. I really hope that this proposal is reconsidered.”
