Power to Vote campaign launch at the Selby Centre
The Selby Trust held an event last Friday (12th Feb), at the Selby Centre in Tottenham, to launch a campaign to increase voter registration and political engagement amongst BAME communities.
Dawn Barnes, Lib Dem GLA candidate, joined Lib Dem Councillor Clive Carter, Lib Dem activist Melissa Gordon and other local politicians at the event and spoke about this important issue on behalf of Haringey Liberal Democrats.
Dawn Barnes, Lib Dem GLA candidate and Haringey resident, said:
“I was really pleased to be at the launch event on behalf of Haringey Liberal Democrats to support the drive to increase BAME voter registration.
“It is vital that we make sure all communities know the voter registration system has changed and ensure they don’t lose the opportunity to cast their ballot. Individual voter registration has brought a lot of challenges for all the political parties. We all have to make more efforts to ensure that people who are entitled to vote know what they need to do to stay on the register. And that is particularly important for the BAME community where voter registration has historically not been as high.
“That’s why I and the Liberal Democrats, think the work that the Selby Centre and Trust, The Asian Centre, Haringey Community Organisers, Ubele Initiative, Hornsey Vale and Haringey Community Builders is doing is vital. The power to vote campaign is something that I and my fellow Liberal Democrats whole-heartedly support.”
