“Remainer rebellion” set to power Liberal Democrat gain in Hornsey & Wood Green constituency

Hornsey & Wood Green constituency is shaping up to the be the site of an electoral upset in the upcoming General Election.

The seat is currently held by Labour with a large majority. However, it is Liberal Democrat Dawn Barnes who clearly has all the momentum in this race. The Liberal Democrats gained seven councillors in the constituency in the 2018 local elections and in May they topped the ballot across the constituency in elections for the European parliament. Meanwhile, Labour will likely find its indecisive stance on Brexit to be a major handicap in one of the most heavily pro-remain areas in the whole country.

This is borne out by projections commissioned by Best for Britain based on a national survey of 46,000 people. Their estimates suggest that Dawn Barnes is polling just 5% behind the incumbent Labour MP, while all other candidates trail far behind.

Dawn Barnes is a communications professional and councillor for Crouch End. She has also successfully campaigned for Haringey Council to pay all its employees the London Living Wage.

Speaking in response to the news that a General Election has been called, Dawn said that:

“Part of what makes me proud to call Hornsey and Wood Green my home is our tradition of inclusion, diversity and internationalism. People who live here are proud of our global links and of the thousands of EU nationals that are our neighbours. That’s why voters in this seat aren’t just against Boris Johnson’s Brexit, they are against any kind of Brexit. Residents are looking for a Remain MP from a Remain party with a leader who is a Remainer. People are no longer prepared to settle for Labour trying to have it both ways.

“The European Elections showed that the Liberal Democrats can win in Hornsey & Wood Green. We are clearly the strongest remain alternative to Labour, the Conservatives and Brexit here.”
